A step in the right direction

I can remember back to about a year ago when I was watching Mr. Bill O'Reilly and a story came up on holiday displays inside the Washington state capitol. If you don't know Mr. O'Reilly, he is a big fan of saying, "We say Merry Christmas". Inevitably every year he has a story on the "godless" americans who are destroying Christmas. Well last year the Washington state government put up a "holiday" tree in celebration of the holiday season. Then a group of Jewish people got upset and demanded a Minorah be put next to the tree. Then like clock work the Christians got involved and their voices were heard and of course a nativity scene was put next to the Minorah. All this was obviously unimportant to Mr. Bill "No Spin" O'Reilly because only when a group called the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) got involved and put up a sign that said, "There is no god and religion enslaves minds and hardens hearts" did Mr. No Spin decide to get involved.

Bible Cherries

We have all seen or at least heard of the anti-gay marriage proponents out at some protest touting signs that say, "Homosexuality is an abomination!", quoting Leviticus 20:13. I usually pay no attention to these people because I usually write them off to be just crazy people. I held this view for some time. But my perspective of these people changed after I read Sam Harris' book The End of Faith. I realized that these people were not crazy. Most, if not all, were pefectly sane. They pretty much lived the same kind of life I did. Work , eat, and sleep. So what made them different than me that, in the beginning, I would label them crazy? It was so obvious to me after reading Sam Harris' book. These people had a predisposition of religiosity. They believed with every fiber of their being the veracity of the Bible. This is where they derived their inspiration, ethics, and morals. They had an outside source telling them how to feel and think.

God is Love...?

I remeber several years ago I was reading through 1st John 4:8 saying that "God is love". It immediately reminded me of 1st Corinthians 13 the so-called "love" chapter where Paul infamously tells us what real love is and it hit me in the face like I should've had a V8 or something. That if "God is love" he must be all these things Paul tells us love is. This was God's true character or in lay terms he must be all the things Paul talks about. So I went on year after year believing that God was all what Paul said love was and I reveled and boasted in the fact that my God was a loving God.

The Death Narratives

To Christians today the death of Jesus unequivocally proves Jesus is God and the messiah. There are many proponents who like to use the gospels accounts of Jesus’ death to prove that he was and is the messiah promised in the Old Testament. One of the biggest and loudest proponents is none other than Dick Rueben. I remember not too long ago watching a video of him using the gospels to show that Jesus is the messiah. He would use a little of Matthew then skip to a verse in Luke and then compare those to Mark and tie all those together with John and voila, you have Jesus as the promised messiah. I was astonished that it could just be that easy. I began asking my self, “How’d he do that?” So I hit the internet right away and began researching. I got a couple books from my library and set out to see if this guy was right and if it was just that easy or if he was totally misinformed.

The Individual Experience of Life: The differences amongst a vast majority of different people

I think the title of this chapter is a little self-explanatory but I will break it down and make it easier to swallow. This chapter is about the experience of life and how it differs from person to person. Whether we were created or evolved from a “monkeyfishfrog” (thanks Mrs. Garrison), we are all different. Especially when it comes to how one looks at life. We all don’t share the same view on life and for this I am extremely grateful.

On the Road Again...

There are many roads we venture down in our lives here on Earth. Whether it is down the road of education or prosperity or down the road of drug and alcohol abuse; we all are venturing down life’s roads. Whenever there is a crossroads in life it always seems to hit us in the most inopportune time. Whether we are just comfortable in the direction we are already going or completely ready for the change, life always throws a curveball. Even if we think we are ready to take on the challenge of change, we really are never fully ready and as prepared as we would like to think and be. One of these crossroads life has is always the hardest to follow; at least it is this way for me. This is the life long endeavor of seeking for the truth.

Divine, Deity, or Delusion

Today people say that the Bible definitively supports and champions Jesus as god. They use various Bible verses to prove to a degree of absolution that Jesus was divine and deity or god. They say that Jesus’ own disciples understood him to be god incarnate. They even claim that Paul the apostle understood Jesus to be god. But before I begin destroying their  reasoning I would like to point out one thing. I will only be using the “claims” of deity that Jesus spoke himself. I will not be using claims that Paul said because I think it is bogus to use his “claims” and here’s why.
