God is Love...?

I remeber several years ago I was reading through 1st John 4:8 saying that "God is love". It immediately reminded me of 1st Corinthians 13 the so-called "love" chapter where Paul infamously tells us what real love is and it hit me in the face like I should've had a V8 or something. That if "God is love" he must be all these things Paul tells us love is. This was God's true character or in lay terms he must be all the things Paul talks about. So I went on year after year believing that God was all what Paul said love was and I reveled and boasted in the fact that my God was a loving God.

It wasnt' until I decided about a little more than a year ago to ask my self why I believed in the things I did and try and justify everything I had faith in. I wasn't looking for a way out, if anthing I was trying to deepen my love and adoration for Jesus. But when one seeks for the truth they usually find it and adversely "the truth sets you free". So of course what I did had the adverse effect. The truth is liberating and opened my eyes to atheism and Darwinian natural selection. It also opened my eyes to the horrific, irrational, and absurd world of theism.

Then I began to disect the Christian theology and religion piece by piece. It was more of a disection of the sickness of Christianity that plagued my body. I needed to be rid of all its by-products and dangerous thoughts. When I began this I entered into a world I never knew existed. It was a world of almost an unending myriad of contradictions and discrepancies the Bible was full of which certainly included the "God is love" problem.

If "God is love" then he must fit all the criteria set by Paul in 1st Corinthians 13. If God does not fit the criteria then God is not love or Paul had it wrong. But when you consider Paul was supposedly under "divine inspiration" there is no way Paul could have got it wrong.

Let's begin with "Love is not jealous". This almost needs no explanation but I will give it anyways. Exodus 34:14 tells us all we need to know. "you shall not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God". His very name is jealous! So lets break this down.

1. God is love.
2. Love is not jealous.
3. God IS jealous (his very name is jealous).
4. God is NOT love.

2. Love is not provoked. This means God cannot be provoked into anything because his very nature, love, does not allow it. But we all know this isn't the case. Duet. 9:7, Jud. 2:12, 1 Kings 14:9, etc... all show God being provoked. So...

1. God is love.
2. Love is not provoked.
3. God is provoked.
4. God is NOT love.

3. Love does not act unbecomingly or of itself. It does not seek its own. We have all heard the story of Job right. This is a story that has God him self make a wager with satan to prove Job will always stay righteous. So he gives all power to satan to destroy Job. All for the benefit of who? God, not Job. Who would want there lives turned upside down to say the least just so God can show satan who is right? Therefore God abused his powers. So once again...

1. God is love.
2. Love does not act unbecomingly or of itself. It does not seek its own.
3. God acted selfishly and of his self to seek his own.
4. God is NOT love.

4. The fourth and final point I want to make isn't of course the last one they all almost unequivocally point to God not being a God of love. But the fourth I want to make is to me the most powerful one that proves my point. Love does not "take into account evil done to it". So let's get this straight God wont remember your transgressions because love doesn't take into account all your wrong doing? This is absolutely ridiculous because all christians know that anyone who sins and doesn't ask forgiveness is going to hell especially those damn atheists and homosexuals! So finally, the proverbial nail in the coffin,...

1. God is love.
2. Love does not take into account evil done to it.
3. God sends people to hell for sinning against him.
4. God is NOT love.

So in conclusion the answer seems to be that God is NOT love or Paul got it wrong. But I dont know a single Christian who would like to say either because if you say God is NOT love then you are saying that John got it wrong and then you worship a hateful and vengeful God who really donesnt give a shit about you. Or you are saying that the Bible is a product of human intuition and was not divinely inspired.....take your pick because both cannot be right...you cannot have cake and eat it too...

PS...Paul again must have got it wrong when he stated that, in 1st Corinthians 14:33, "God is not the author of confusion..." because its pretty confusing when the Bible is supposed to be "perfect" huh?

  1. Well said.
    But you neglected one detail.

    1. God is love.
    2. Love does not take into account evil done to it.
    3. God sends people to hell for sinning against him.
    4. God is NOT love.

You see, Christians today claim that God doesn't send anyone to hell! They say now, "You send yourselves to hell," thus once again removing the Big Guy from any blame whatsoever. I'm surprised you haven't encountered this--it's quite prevalent, especially in the Land of the Evangelicals.

None of this really detracts from the truth of your statemant, though. I've used the love/jealously argument myself, and that was the reply I got. God seems incapable of following the very rules he set down.
